Unlike friendships, family relationships are bound by a unspoken ledger of emotional and financial debts.

In the best family dramas, no one is pure evil. The overbearing mother genuinely believes she is protecting her child. The rebellious son genuinely feels suffocated.

This character provides materially but is emotionally void. They pay for the house, the school, the car, but cannot say "I love you" or "I am sorry." The drama arises from the family’s silent starvation for affection. The children grow up either desperate for approval (leading to overachievement) or nihilistically rebellious. Logan Roy in Succession is the modern titan of this archetype—dangling the company as a proxy for love.

Controls through financial dependence, intimidation, or emotional withdrawal.

Put your characters in a confined space where they are forced to interact politely while boiling underneath.

Even experienced writers can fall into traps when writing family drama.
