The process involves testing a muscle—typically an extended arm—while the individual holds a specific belief statement in mind. A practitioner applies gentle downward pressure while the person resists. If the muscle remains strong and locks in place, the subconscious mind agrees with the belief (congruence). If the muscle weakens and yields easily, the subconscious mind disagrees or holds resistance (incongruence).
